Do professional social networks work ?

I have used the social networks since 2004 (or so) when I received a first invite to join Plaxo, they were claiming to avoid keeping track of your contacts' moves among companies, email and phone number changes and so on.
Later, around 2005, I signed up in Linkedin where I am quite active with more 500 contacts after five years as a user and every now and then, somebody asks me "what is the point of these professional social networks? Do they work?" Well, here is my answer.
To me, business is most of it, about contacts, a good product is only the first step, then you need to build a trusting relationship between the seller and the buyer.
Same applies to professional opportunities, you count first on the people that have worked with you or near you or from whom you have references through a common friend or (ex) colleague.
Professional social networks widen the connection line of sight, there you have real contacts, people you really have met face to face at some point as well as online contacts from whom you know their activity, their experience, skills, contacts, travelling activity and some others.
The further a reference is the less trust it creates but all connections are useful, at least to keep track of where they are working...

Is it all against all ?

It just came to my mind when some time ago (wow, almost two years already passed) I launched a blog to gather posts on how mobile, internet and software industries were nearing each other and creating a wider market where the competition was more open and less constrained to their respective vertical markets.
After the two years have passed – so quick and nice – I would like to come back to the topic and see who is competing to whom and in what markets.
Let me limit the scope of this and upcoming posts on the big players: Nokia, Google, Yahoo, Vodafone, Microsoft, Amazon, Apple and Dell – although maybe Samsung could be a better one to follow.

... more posts to come on this topic ... stay tuned ...

Comparando Dopplr y TripIt

Veremos …..

Should Steve Ballmer gives me a ring ...

I wanted to illustrate in this post some key signals I have seen in the last weeks regarding internet and software markets evolution.

Headline: HP, Intel and Yahoo! joined to research and develop cloud computing.
The Software as a Service (SaaS) is, again, renamed as Cloud Computing, meaning that computation and storage are not located in user's computer anymore but in a remote data center serving thousands or even millions of users.
My comment: This is actually a belated reaction to an agreement signed last year by Google and IBM to work in similar direction that indeed reinforces this roadmap. Intel wins anyway, it doesn't care whether microprocessors are less powerful and local or more powerful and remote. HP also wins anyway, it is one on the top of desktop and laptop sellers but also selling big servers. Yahoo! must catch this train, otherwise Google will be (more) unreachable.

Headline: Windows Live Messenger is now available for Blackberry.
The other day, I read a post regarding an agreement between RIM and Microsoft that would end up with a version of Microsoft Messenger for Blackberry and it took only about a week to have it available, actually I just downloaded it yesterday to my "crackberry" and in spite of a few server connection errors, it works as well as GTalk.
My comment: Microsoft historically has been using its supremacy in PC (desktop, laptop and handheld) operating systems to position its internet services like messenger, if anyone wanted to use messenger on their Blackberry, they must access it through a browser and it was very slow and not friendly. This is a very key movement, Microsoft opens an internet service to a competitor that doesn't use Windows as operating system. It is becoming apparent that Microsoft are adding internet services to their core business.

Headline: Microsoft develops an operating systems not based on Windows.
Even Microsoft is looking at lightweight operating systems not meant to support local advanced features but intented to be a gateway to internet - it is the so-called Midori.
My comment: Microsoft strategic roadmap looks quite unclear they are heading for Software as a Service direction but changing it slightly as Software plus Service, being both software and service quite likely provided by Microsoft. However, at the same time, they are proposing Silverlight as an alternative to Adobe Flash to allow software ubiquity.

Personally, I don't see Microsoft's strategy clear enough to fight in this battle. They are trying to keep their superiority in the PC software market as well as they try to move faster in the internet services but, one can't move and stay at the same time.

Should Steve Ballmer gives me a ring and asks me how they should move forward I would recommend a spin off, on one side a very profitable software company, growing slowly or even keeping their current market share and selling and improving Windows and Office and in the other side all internet services, aggressive growth rate, taking risks, acquiring competitors and being on the cutting edge of the technology.

Wow, my mobile is ringing, country code of US, Redmond, excuse me for a minute I must take this call ....

Yahoo - Microsoft marriage

As most of you might already know, Microsoft tried to buy Yahoo! some months ago without success, at that point Yahoo's CEO, namely Jerry Yang, considered bid too low for the value of the company. It was said negotiations were closed but, honestly, everybody thought tale was not finished at all. After a short while, Microsoft changed its offer to bid only for search and advertisement businesses where its weaknesses are more apparent and more value can be added to Microsoft. There is guy, Carl Icanh, who is trying to facilitate negotiations and would possibly take a good position in the after-deal-with-Microsoft Yahoo company.

First of all, I must admit I am not aware of the details of the negotiations so take my opinion as the one of an internet user, probably an experienced and thoughtful user but an anonymous user at the end of the day ... anyway, take this as you prefer.

Why Microsoft and Yahoo are negotiating ?
Microsoft is leader in PC licensed software and Yahoo is relatively well positioned as a content broker portal and at first sight, they both are huge corporations with an enormous value in stock markets and with quite healthy businesses in the software and internet markets so, why don't they simply try to stay where they are? Answer is very simple, answer is Google, they are "afraid" of Google.

Google moved the battle field where they are the strongest, that is the most likely successful strategy when competitors are, overall, stronger than you but you have some niche where you would defeat them. If you are smart enough and have such ability, you must move the fight to your niche. Google did it, or more precisely, all of us did it along with them.

At the moment, not many of us think the future is on building faster and better performing PCs, computing process power has been displaced from your PC or laptop to some remote locations where thousand of computers serve million of users. This morning, I read Samsung is about to launch a laptop without hard disk at all. In that scenario local computing devices are becoming a just commodity, no more than a paired keyboard and screen with internet access capabilities.
On the other hand, open source software is moving fast and competing evenly to proprietary software ... but I will leave it to a good friend and also author of this blog, who will elaborate that further.

Question is, how do you think Microsoft sees itself in the long term, let's say in 3 or 4 years time?
My take is they see worse than now, they are leaders in PCs but focus of users is moving where they are weak, to the internet and remote processing. General perception, sorry if you thing differently, is that Microsoft keeps trying to make us pay for a bad product, keeps trying to make money out of something Linux can offer for free and so son. And I think perception of users is everything in a fast growing market like internet.

Advertisement business of Google.

Advertisement is the other market where Google is defeating competition. And here, Google Guys thought again there is a different, a probably better, way of managing business, and they launched AdWords with a huge success. The so called "sponsored links" on the right hand side of the search results page are linked to the keywords the user entered in the search field, if you search for flight, you will get sponsored links of some important airlines. But, what are airlines appearing in that box and which will the one on top of the side box? Well, here is when the innovation of Google kicked twice.
Firstly, for every keyword, like "flight", there is an on-going auction for all customers /advertisers, if Iberia thinks "flight" keyword is worth one dollar per click and they are within the best bidders, their website will be shown at the side box every time a user searches for the mentioned keyword.
So far, Google would look like any other company concerned on making as much money as possible, which wouldn't be surprising, but here is where second innovation comes. There is room for more than one advertiser in the side box and the criteria to select who is on top of the sponsored links box is just popularity, the one that is clicked most often by the users will be shown on top, meaning it has higher probability to be clicked by the next user.

They are thinking on making money as any other private company but they always leave some space for letting the user to be on command. They could have also opened auction for the first, second, third and so on places of the sponsored links box with greater benefits but they didn't do that way.
User's perception is Google search is reliable and even advertisers are sorted based on user's preferences and Google Guys become, again, the Good Guys.

Si no tienes ningún libro escrito todavía, ¡ a qué estás esperando !

No echar combustible

He dicho !!!

Para decir qué música escuchas: "sonando die another day de james bond"
